Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate child rearing, perceived stress and need for employer-supported child care of working women. For these purposes, a total of 294 working women with children of ages 6 or under whese selected from hospitals, and schools, public health centers in Taegu and Kyungsangpookdo.
Among the total objectives, 16.0% were separated from their chidren and the major reason was womens jobs. Some of the biggest problems experienced by objectives who had no children was not meeting their children whenever they wanted(80.9%), worrying about the formation of personality in their children (70.2%), and education of the children(70.2%). 35.0% of the total respondants let their mothers-in-law take care of their children. Ironically 26.3% of respondants who were living with their children let them go to kindergarten or a day care center while 10.6% of respondants who were separated from their children let them go to kindergarten or a day care center.
Most problems experienced by working respondents were that their children didn¡¯t have appropriate education because of their absence or else during their office hours, so most of the objectives(82.0%) thought they needed an employer-supported child care center and responded, they would take advantage of the employer-supported child care facilities (76.9%) if provided.
Among the total objectives, many of them were stressed out since they didn¡¯t have a chance to pursue their own personal development, and 67.7% had thought of giving up their jobs because of the difficulties in rearing their children.
